Thanks to Dave and Lee for another excellent night, some good and new stuff in there again. Thanks to this week’s Ashes - Brian on bass; Tom on percussion, Brendan on drums (Tom on some of the numbers, but an excellent debut from Diane on Delilah) and Eddie on the harmonica. Thanks to all who lead on some of the numbers – Mark; Les H; Ernie; Eddie; Graham P; Brendan; Steve G; David S(debit); Bernard; Margo and Anne(debut); Trevor; Steve McG(in his own style); Graham K; Joe(debut) and Tom (outro). All the ladies on 7 Little Girls. No video this week, David B was supporting PNE, who unfortunately lost to Fulham.
Short but good STARTIME this week, thanks to
- Trevor and Paul – with the Stone’s Paint It Black(1966), some good uke accompaniment from Paul on this one.
- Les H with a Civil War negro spiritual Oh Mary Don’t You Weep, first recorded in 1915 (probably the year of Les’ birth) and revived in 1964 by Pete Seeger, but since recorded and performed by many including Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin and Burl Ives.
- Graham P gave us Volare, probably best known by Dean Martin, but the original English lyrics were written for Gracie Fields no less. The song was written in 1957 for Italy’s entry to the 1958 Eurovision Song Contest, it came 3rd, but later in the year won two Grammies for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. In 2008 Italy produced a special stamp celebrating the song’s 50th anniversary, - they have so little to celebrate!
Next Week it’s the turn of Trevor Gwynn and Steve Gilmore. Set List later.
I’m now away for a couple of weeks – Vegas and the West Coast. That would be St Helens for Johnny Vegas and then Southport. Eunice is in charge of butties and Eric will cover the e-mails to members. I had a birthday earlier this week and my sons now refer to me as SOFA KING, not that I’m a couch potato, but I’m sofa king old. I used to be Spider Man, again not that I’m a super hero, but I struggle to get out of the bath.
Take Care, see you all soon / Steve
