Our Ashes beat combo this week was Brian on bass (and mandolin), Brendan on drums (assisted by Margo?), Tom on percussion and Eddie back on harmonica.
Must make a mention of thanks to Joy for the cake (bless half term) – that didn’t last long, did it?
Thanks to this week’s soloists – Les H; Tom; Eddie; Mark; Graham P; Ernie; Trevor; Brendan; Les B, Joy; Steve McG and a duet by Diane and Eunice.
This week’s STARTIME featured:
- Les H with Hank Williams’ Setting the Woods on Fire (1962) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3hzYRVAkUs
- Trevor gave us Cat Stevens’ MoonShadow (1970) from the album Teaser and the Fire Cat. Now known as Yusuf Islam, he considers this as one of his best songs. Yusif that is – not Trevor. I don’t think Yusuf knows Trevor What next? Blue; Paper; Carolina; Sorrento, August the list is endless.
- Les B gave us Ricky Valance’s Tell Laura I Love Her (1960) -the early sixties was a era of tragedy songs – Twinkle’s Terry accelerating his motorbike; The Everlys’ Ebony Eyes, waiting for a plane to land, Shangri-Las’ Leader of the Pack; John Leyton’s Johnny Remember Me etc.
- With the fear that Dave would being doing something, Steve McG gave us The Mamas and The Papas’ Creeque Alley (1967) – an autobiographical song about how the group formed.
Diane also mentioned a request for us to do a gig at St Jude’s RC on Sat 2nd April for a 45 minutes slot in the afternoon. Please let her know if you are interested in joining in.
Next Week it’s Steve Gilmore and Trevor Gwynn. Set-list later.
