Thanks again to the resident band of Brendan this week on drums, Brian this week on bass, Tom as usual on percussion and Eddie as normal on the harmonica.
Thanks to this week’s leaders on most of the items played – Brendan; Eddie; Graham P; Eunice and Diane; Al; Carole; Mark; Trevor; Les B; Bernard; Dave D and Ernie.
Thanks for the following on STARTIME
- Steve F with Dr Hook’s “I’m Going to Love You Just a Little Bit More” Enough said. In the New Year there will be a bundle of new stuff coming out from Graham, and this will include at least three Dr Hook numbers – the above, Sylvia’s Mother (which Eddie did a couple of weeks ago) and When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Women. They did some really nice ballads, along with the more comedy ones, including Better Love Next Time Baby; If Not You, and Sharing the Night Together.
- Carole gave us Fleetwood Mac’s “I Need Your Love So Bad”, excellent vocal and (at least I was listening) some great bas work from Brian. The song was written by one the band’s founders Peter Green, who also composed and played Albatross. He is counted as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Since the mid-seventies Peter has been in hospital several times for treatment for schizophrenia, thereafter he has undertaken some session work, but he states that the medication he needs to take, makes it hard for him to concentrate and saps his desire to play. Sad, a very talented man.
- Steve McG, backed by Brian, gave us Stray Cats Strut from The Stray Cats debut album. Released in 1981, the song made No 11 in the UK and No3 in the US.
- Les B then gave us Charlie Pride’s “Mississippi Cotton Pickin’ Delta Town” (2001). Charlie himself was born in Mississippi to share-croppers, one of 11 children. He has had 39 songs in the Billboard Country Hits Chart. The Leigh U3A group always seem keen on his “Crystal Chandeliers” !!
Next week it’s the Big Christmas Bash with a late bar, if you need to make your own arrangements for lifts as we are unsure when we’ll finish, although I believe we did agree on 11pm for the uking. Looking forward to a great night. The Two Graham's leading.
Our lady members are arranging all the decoration and catering. Sandwiches have been pre-ordered, but with cakes, pasties and nibbles there should be plenty for all.
Please note that by a show of hands it seemed a little uncertain on how many would be attending on 29th Dec (TwixtMas) maybe only half the normal attendance. So sandwiches will not be ordered. Sorry Dave and Lee, you may have a poorly attended audience that night, but it could be intimate.
